Privacy Policy

The short version
Hug a Tree has no accounts, no ads, and no servers of ours. What you write stays on your device and in your own private iCloud — we can't read it, and you can erase all of it at any time. The one thing we do collect is anonymous usage counts through Firebase Analytics: that something happened, such as a session being finished, never what it was about.
Who we are
Hug a Tree ("the app", "we", "us") is made by No Big Apps. This policy explains, in plain language, what the app does and does not do with your information. You can reach us any time at [email protected].
Information we collect
Hug a Tree stores your session data — what you write, the companions you choose, and timestamps — on your device using SwiftData, and in your own private iCloud so your forest reaches your other devices.
We do not collect, transmit, or store any personal information on our own servers, and we cannot read what is in your iCloud. The app never sends your content anywhere else.
Separately, the app sends anonymous usage events to Firebase Analytics, described under "Analytics" below. Those events contain nothing you have written or measured.
Subscriptions
If you subscribe to Hug a Tree Premium, your purchase is processed by Apple through the App Store. We use RevenueCat to manage and verify your subscription status. RevenueCat receives an anonymous app user ID and the subscription information Apple provides (such as your purchase history in this app and whether a subscription is active) — it does not receive your name, email, or the things you write.
For more detail, see Apple's Privacy Policy and RevenueCat's Privacy Policy.
Notifications
If you allow notifications, the app schedules gentle reminders locally on your device. These are created on the device and nothing about them is sent to us. You can turn them off at any time in iOS Settings, and nothing in the app withers or is lost if you do.
Analytics
Hug a Tree uses Firebase Analytics, a service of Google, to understand how the app is used in aggregate — only that something happened, such as a session being completed or a ribbon tied. It never receives anything you write (ribbon or tree text), your check results, or your moods; those stay on your device. We do not use advertising identifiers and do not track you across other apps or websites.
The events we send are:
- onboarding was finished;
- a tree was planted;
- a ribbon was tied (and only whether it was a worry or a thought), untied, or deleted;
- a session was completed, and which kind it was — breathing, bedtime, looking around, a walk, hugging a tree, tensing and letting go, or counting breaths;
- a check was taken, and which one — never its result;
- a locked tree or forest theme was tapped or unlocked, and which of our built-in ones it was.
Firebase also records some things automatically: a random identifier for this installation of the app, your device model, iOS version, app version, language, approximate region (country or city level, derived from your IP address, which is not stored), when the app was first opened and how long it was in use, and — if you subscribe — that an App Store purchase was made, with the product and its price.
See Google's Privacy Policy for how Google handles this data.
Your data, your control
Everything you write and your session history is stored on your device and in your own iCloud. You can delete individual entries at any time from Footprints in Settings, or erase everything at once — which removes it from iCloud and from your other devices too.
Deleting the app removes what is on the device, but leaves the copy in iCloud until you erase it from within the app or from your iCloud settings.
The anonymous usage events are not tied to your name, email, or Apple ID, so we cannot look up or pick out the ones that came from you. Deleting the app stops any further events and discards the installation identifier on your device.
Children's privacy
Hug a Tree does not knowingly collect information from children under 13. The app is suitable for all ages, but subscription purchases require parental consent for minors.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected on this page, with an updated date at the top.
