Privacy Policy

The short version
Langfolio has no account, no ads, and no servers of ours. Your languages, sessions, notebook and watch & read list stay on your iPhone or iPad, and in your own private iCloud if you turn on sync. We can't read any of it. The one thing we do collect is anonymous usage counts through Firebase Analytics: that something happened, such as a session being logged, never what you wrote.
Who we are
Langfolio ("the app", "we", "us"), listed on the App Store as Langfolio: Polyglot Tracker, is made by No Big Apps, for iPhone and iPad. This policy explains, in plain language, what the app does and does not do with your information. You can reach us any time at [email protected].
What stays on your device
Everything you put into Langfolio is stored on your iPhone or iPad: your languages with their roles, levels and weekly targets, the sessions you log with their notes and resources, your notebook entries, false friends, mix-ups and slips, your watch & read list, your plans and sprints, and your puzzle results. Like the data of any other app, it is included in your device's own backups (iCloud Backup or a computer backup) if you use them.
We do not collect, transmit, or store any of it on servers of ours, and there is no account to sign up for.
iCloud sync
iCloud sync is optional and part of Langfolio Pro. When you turn it on, your languages, sessions, plans, notebook and watch & read list are kept in your own private iCloud database (Apple's CloudKit), so they reach your other iPhone or iPad signed in to the same Apple Account. That database belongs to your Apple Account: we cannot see or access it. Puzzle results stay on each device and do not sync.
You can turn sync off in the app's Settings at any time; the change takes effect the next time you open the app. See Apple's Privacy Policy for how Apple handles iCloud.
Notebook fill-in with Apple Intelligence
With Pro, Langfolio can fill in a notebook entry for you: the word for an idea in each of your languages, and how those words differ. This uses Apple's on-device model (Apple Intelligence) through Apple's Foundation Models framework. The idea you type and the suggestions stay on your device: they are not sent to us, to Apple, or to anyone else. It works only on devices that support Apple Intelligence, and only when you ask for it.
Links and previews
When you add a link to your watch & read list, your iPhone or iPad fetches that page's title and picture straight from the website, using Apple's LinkPresentation framework, much as a browser would. That website sees an ordinary request from your device, such as its IP address, and handles it under its own privacy policy. Nothing goes through us. The link, title and picture are stored with the rest of your data, and opening the link takes you to that website or app.
Purchases
Langfolio Pro is sold through the App Store, as a monthly or yearly subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase. Apple processes the payment, so we never see your payment details, your name or your Apple Account.
We use RevenueCat to check which plan you have and unlock Pro. RevenueCat receives a random app user ID that it creates for this installation, the purchase information the App Store provides (such as which plan you bought, when it renews or ends, and your purchase history in this app), your App Store country and currency, and the technical details that come with every request from the app: Apple's identifier for vendor, your device model, iOS and app version, preferred languages and IP address. It never receives anything you write in the app.
For more detail, see Apple's Privacy Policy and RevenueCat's Privacy Policy.
Notifications
If you turn on fading reminders (part of Pro), the app asks for permission to send notifications, then schedules them on your device for the day a language has gone too long without practice. To work that out, the app reads your log on the device; nothing about it is sent to us. You can turn reminders off in the app's Settings or in your device's Settings at any time.
Siri, Shortcuts and the timer
You can start and stop the timer from Control Center and from the timer on your Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island, and, with Pro, start it, stop it and log time with Siri and Shortcuts. If you use Siri, Apple handles the voice request and passes the app what it needs, such as the language and the minutes; see Apple's privacy information for Siri. Everything else here works entirely on your device.
Spreadsheets and sharing
With Pro, you can import a log from a spreadsheet and export your sessions as a CSV file. The app reads only the file you pick, and an export goes only where you choose to save or send it.
If you share a puzzle result, your device's share sheet sends the text you see (the puzzle, the day, a row of squares and your score) to the app or person you choose. We don't receive it.
Analytics
Langfolio uses Firebase Analytics, a service of Google, to understand how the app is used in aggregate: only that something happened, such as a session being logged or a puzzle being played. It never receives anything you type: not your session notes or resources, the words in your notebook, your slips, the titles and links on your watch & read list, or the names of languages you add yourself (those are counted only as "custom").
The app has no ads, does not use the advertising identifier and never asks to track you. We do not track you across other companies' apps or websites, and ad personalisation and Google signals are switched off.
The events we send are:
- which screen was opened;
- a session was logged: the activity (such as reading or speaking), how long it was, the language (from the app's own list, or "custom"), and how it was logged: by hand, with the timer, with Siri, from Control Center or from the timer on the Lock Screen;
- the timer was started, stopped or discarded, where from, and how long it ran;
- a language was added, with which one (from the app's own list, or "custom"), its role and your level, or its role was changed;
- a notebook entry was added, with how many words it has and whether you marked it as a false friend or a mix-up; Apple Intelligence filled in an entry or couldn't; a slip was added;
- a mix-up drill was started or finished, with the score;
- a puzzle was started or finished: which game, a daily or practice round, and the score;
- something was added to the watch & read list, with whether it's to watch, read or listen to and whether it has a link, or it was ticked off;
- a sprint was started, with how many weeks, or finished, with how it went;
- a spreadsheet was imported or exported, with how many rows, or an import failed;
- iCloud sync or reminders were switched on or off;
- the Langfolio Pro screen was shown, and what led there, or Pro was bought, and which plan.
Alongside the events, the app records whether you have Pro and how many languages you follow.
Firebase also records some things automatically: a random identifier for this installation of the app, Apple's identifier for vendor (a random ID that only apps from the same developer can read on your device), your device model, iOS version, app version, language, approximate region (country or city level, derived from your IP address, which is not stored), when the app was first opened and how long it was in use, and, if you buy Pro, that an App Store purchase was made, with the product and its price.
Google keeps these individual events for 14 months and then deletes them; after that, only aggregated totals remain in our reports. See Google's Privacy Policy for how Google handles this data.
Who else receives data
Only the services named above: Apple (the App Store, iCloud and Siri), Google (Firebase Analytics) and RevenueCat, each for the purpose described. They handle it under their own privacy policies, which protect it at least as well as this one does. We do not sell your data or share it for advertising.
Your data, your control
You can change or delete any session, notebook entry, slip or watch & read item, and deleting a language (Settings → Languages) deletes everything logged for it. With Pro, you can export your sessions as a CSV file.
Deleting the app removes its data from your device; copies inside your device's own backups follow your backup settings. If iCloud sync is on, what you delete in the app is also deleted from iCloud and your other devices. The copy in iCloud stays after you delete the app, until you delete Langfolio's data in your iCloud storage settings.
The anonymous usage events are not tied to your name, email or Apple Account, so we cannot look up or pick out the ones that came from you. Deleting the app stops any further events and discards the installation identifier on your device. If you have a question or request about your data, email us and we'll help.
Children's privacy
Langfolio does not knowingly collect information from children under 13. Purchases require parental consent for minors.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected on this page, with an updated date at the top.
